Source: Investors face 70 pct loss in Greek deal

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Investors participating in a deal to slash Greece's massive debt would face an overall loss on their bond holdings of around 70 percent, a person familiar with the negotiations said Monday.

Athens and representatives of investors holding Greek government bonds over the weekend came close to a final deal designed to make Greece's debt sustainable. The country has to secure an agreement with its creditors to get any further international rescue funds.

If the agreement works as planned, it will help Greece remain solvent and help Europe avoid a blow to its already weak financial system, even though banks and other bond investors will have to accept multibillion-dollar losses.

The person briefed on the talks said Monday that the 70 percent loss was the result of cutting the bonds' face value in half, reducing the average interest rate to between 3.5 per cent and 4 percent and pushing repayment of the bonds decades into the future.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are confidential.

The deal, which aims to reduce the country's debt by about euro100 billion, needs to be finalized quickly. Greece runs the risk of a disorderly default on March 20, when it faces a euro14.5 billion bond repayment it cannot afford without additional help.

Many investors ? banks, insurance companies and hedge funds ? who hold Greek bonds also hold debt from other countries that use the euro, which could lose value if there is a full-fledged Greek default. This is the scenario analysts fear most and why they hope investors will voluntarily accept a partial loss on their Greek bonds.

The agreement taking shape is a key step before Greece can get a second, euro130 billion bailout. The country has been surviving since May 2010 on an initial euro110 billion package of rescue loans from other countries using the euro and the International Monetary Fund.

Besides restructuring its debt with private investors, Greece must also take other steps to secure further aid. It must cut its deficit and boost the competitiveness of its economy through layoffs of public sector workers and the sale of several state companies, among other moves.

Earlier Monday, Greek lenders Eurobank and Alpha Bank said a planned merger to create the country's largest bank by assets could be put on hold because of the negotiations over the bond swap.

The banks said that "an accurate timeline cannot be given" to complete the deal announced last August because of the negotiations.

Greece's finance ministry expressed surprise at the announcement, arguing that the negotiations had produced "nothing new or different" to factors already taken into account by both banks.

French government to cut 2012 growth estimate: source (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? The French government is set to revise down its estimate for 2012 economic growth in an upcoming revision to its budget bill, a government source said on Sunday.

The source told reporters following a televised interview with President Nicolas Sarkozy that the government envisages cuts to spending, rather than further tax rises, to make up for the likely shortfall.

Sarkozy's conservative government has been banking on gross domestic products growth of 1.0 percent this year.

LIMA, Peru (AP) ? A fire swept through a two-story private rehabilitation center for addicts in a poor part of Peru's capital Saturday, killing 27 people and critically injuring five as firefighters punched holes through walls to rescue residents locked inside.

The "Christ is Love" center for drug and alcohol addicts was unlicensed and overcrowded and its residents were apparently kept inside "like prisoners," Health Minister Alberto Tejada told The Associated Press.

Authorities said 26 people died at the scene, and prosecutors spokesman Raul Sanchez said Saturday night that one of six men hospitalized in critical condition died later.

Peru's fire chief, Antonio Zavala, said most of the victims died of asphyxiation. All the victims appeared to be male.

The local police chief, Clever Zegarra, said the cause of the 9 a.m. fire was under investigation.

"There has been talk of the burning of an object, of a mattress, but also of a fight that resulted in a fire. All of this is speculation," he told the AP. "I've been here at the scene from morning to evening but for the moment the exact cause of the fire is not known."

One resident of the center on a narrow dead-end street in Lima's teeming San Juan de Lurigancho district said he was eating breakfast on the second floor of the center when he saw flames coming from the first floor, where the blaze apparently began.

Gianfranco Huerta told local RPP news radio station that he leaped from a window to safety.

"The doors were locked; there was no way to get out," he told the station.

AP journalists at scene said all the windows of the building they were able to see were barred. Journalists were not allowed inside as police cordoned off the block. By early afternoon, all the dead had been removed from the center.

Most of the bodies seen by reporters were shirtless, their faces blackened. Many were also shoeless.

"This rehabilitation center wasn't authorized. It was a house that they had taken over ... for patients with addictions and they had the habit of leaving people locked up with no medical supervision," Tejada, the health minister, said.

Authorities said they did not know how many people were inside the center at the time of the fire. They said they were looking for the center's owners and staff, some of whom apparently fled the scene.

The local police chief, Zegarra, identified the owner as Raul Garcia.

Zoila Chea, an aunt of one victim, said families paid Garcia $37 to treat an addicted relative and $15 a week thereafter.

She said that neighbors had constantly complained about the center and that it had been closed twice by authorities.

Chea, 45, said relatives were prohibited from seeing interned patients during the first three months of treatment, which she added consisted mainly of reading the Bible.

Her nephew, Luis Chea, was at the center for a month, she said.

Zavala, the national fire chief, said the blaze was of "Dantesque proportions." Firefighters had to punch a hole through a wall with an adjoining building to help people trapped inside the rehabilitation center.

"We've had to use electric saws to cut through the metal bars of the doors to be able to work," Zavala said.

Relatives of residents of the center gathered near the building weeping and seeking word of their loved ones. As the day wore on, nearby sidewalks filled with relatives mourning and trying to console one another.

One of them was Maria Benitez, aunt of 18-year-old Carlos Benitez, who she said was being treated at the center.

"I want to know if he is OK or not," she told ATV television.

Michael Lohan Back in the Hospital With Chest Pains

Lindsay Lohan's estranged and equally troubled father Michael Lohan was taken back to the hospital early Friday morning after experiencing chest pains.

MiLo was transferred from a rehab facility in Palm Beach, Fla., after doctors found blood clots and put him on medication to try and break them up.

Doctors feel they don't need to perform surgery, but they want to keep in the hospital for a couple of days to make sure Mike's medication works.

This is the second time in less than two months Lohan has been hospitalized for recurring heart problems. He collapsed at an AA meeting the last time.

He had surgery to repair a blockage back on December 5.

Lohan is due to be released from rehab on March 16. It's unclear whether that will be pushed back due to this and previous hospital stays.

We wish him a fast recovery in any case.

Ex-Boston Mayor White, led in turbulent '70s, dies (AP)

BOSTON ? Former Mayor Kevin H. White, who led the city for 16 years including racially turbulent times in the 1970s and was credited with putting it on a path to prosperity, died Friday, a family spokesman said. He was 82.

White, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2003, died peacefully at his Boston home surrounded by his family, spokesman and friend George Regan said.

"He was a man who built Boston into the world-class city it is today," said Regan, who called his loss "devastating."

White, a white Irish Catholic from a family of politicians, is credited with revitalizing Boston's downtown and seeing the city through court-ordered busing, but he ended his four-term tenure in 1983 under a cloud of ethics suspicions.

White, a Democrat, was elected Massachusetts secretary of state three times before running for mayor for the first time in 1967 against antibusing activist Louise Day Hicks. He defeated her with support from the black community and liberals.

After losing a 1970 bid for governor, White was re-elected mayor in 1971, again defeating Hicks. He won again narrowly in 1975 and 1979.

White was considered as a vice presidential running mate to U.S. Sen. George McGovern of South Dakota in 1972 but was passed over for U.S. Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri, who was later shunted aside for R. Sargent Shriver Jr.

After U.S. District Court Judge W. Arthur Garrity ordered busing to desegregate public schools in 1974, White protected schoolchildren from violence with federal and state assistance during the period of crisis and in 1976 led a march of 30,000 to protest racial violence.

White was never totally comfortable with busing, however, and called Garrity's plan "too severe."

"I wish I knew a way to have taught Garrity or convinced Garrity to be more generous ... or softer in his implementation of that order," White said after his time as mayor.

U.S. Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, a fellow Democrat, said White "knew how to wisely wield the power of the mayor's office for the public good."

"For 16 years," Kerry said in a statement, "the mayor shepherded the city through the turbulence of the late '60s and mid-'70s and in the process ushered in the remarkable city we know today."

Current Mayor Thomas Menino, also a Democrat, praised White for his contributions to the city.

"Mayor Kevin White was a great friend and a great leader who left a lasting mark of hope and inspiration on the City of Boston," he said in a statement. "He will be sorely missed."

White's first two terms were known for his Little City Halls in the city's far-flung neighborhoods that gave power to ethnic and racial minorities, but he consolidated his power in his final two terms.

White closed the Little City Halls and instead used a network of ward lieutenants who rewarded the mayor's supporters with city jobs and contracts.

Seven mayoral aides were eventually indicted on fraud and extortion charges. His one-time budget director and an official of the Boston Redevelopment Authority were convicted of fraudulently obtaining city pensions. A deputy commissioner was convicted of tax evasion for failing to report money that prosecutors said he gained from bribes.

White was never implicated. The State Ethics Commission, however, conducted a 10-month investigation that found "reasonable cause" that White had violated conflict-of-interest laws.

The city also wallowed in a financial crisis in the later years of his tenure that led to layoffs of police officers and firefighters and the shutdown of some stations.

The crises were exploited by his critics, who called him King Kevin, and he dropped out of the 1983 mayoral race, eventually won by Raymond Flynn.

"It's no secret that Kevin and I were rivals for many years," Flynn said. "But underneath that sometimes heated rivalry, rooted in different priorities, was a mutual respect. Kevin and I shared a deep love for this complex, fascinating city of Boston."

A liberal reformer, White appealed to a cross-section of society, including the young.

Once, when the Rolling Stones were arrested on the way to Boston, the mayor released them into his own custody.

"The Stones have been busted, but I have sprung them!" he told an audience at Boston Garden.

While the busing crisis brought a stain to the city, White was also credited with revitalizing the city's downtown, especially the shops and restaurants of Quincy Market, which remains one of the city's top tourist attractions. He thought the downtown renaissance would make Boston a "world-class city."

A statue of White was unveiled near Quincy Market in 2006.

Gov. Deval Patrick, a Democrat, said White's stewardship created "a path to prosperity for the city."

White's father and maternal grandfather had been Boston City Council presidents. In 1956, he married Kathryn Galvin, the daughter of another City Council president. He was educated at Tabor Academy, Williams College, Boston College Law School and the Harvard Graduate School of Public Administration.

After handing over the office to Flynn in 1984, White accepted a position at Boston University as a professor of communications and public management.

While mayor in 1970, White had major surgery to remove two-thirds of his stomach. He suffered a heart attack in 2001 while at a Florida restaurant and spent several days in a hospital when he had a pacemaker implanted.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathyrn Galvin White, five children and several grandchildren.

Is President Obama for or Against Teachers Unions? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Obama has, in the past, been very vocal about his support of teachers unions, especially in the wake of multi-state collective-bargaining battles throughout 2011. However, in President Obama's 2012 State of the Union address, he made some remarks that uncharacteristically went against core, traditional teachers union beliefs. So which side is he on? Is President Obama for or against teachers unions?

In his 2012 State of the Union address, according to WhiteHouse.gov, President Obama remarks:

"Give [schools] the resources to keep good teachers on the job, and reward the best ones. And in return, grant schools flexibility: to teach with creativity and passion, to stop teaching to the test, and to replace teachers who just aren't helping kids learn."

According to his statements, President Obama cuts right to the heart of teachers unions and their core philosophies. In essence, he's endorsing the idea of rewarding good teachers and firing bad ones.

This goes against traditional union philosophies, in that he is proposing differentiation - or publicly calling out and pointing fingers at both good and bad teachers, with benefits or consequences for each group, employment (and salary) based on merit, and eliminating tenure as a means of continued employment or pay raises.

This being said, the pro-Obama National Education Association still supports the president, with its top headline on the NEA webpage reading "NEA President Praises President Obama's Vision for America."

According to HableDash, the NEA even raised its annual fees $10 for each of its 3.2 million members in 2011, in order to raise $32 million for its campaign endorsing the president. So if the NEA, the most powerful teachers union in the United States, is heavily-endorsing President Obama, it seems to suggest he is pro-union.

The 2012 State of the Union address, though, leaves open the possibility for debate. While his background may appear labor-supportive, Obama's carefully-crafted words in his address were meant to satisfy both those who were for and against unions. After stating firmly that teachers are important, he then backtracks and says teachers must be held accountable. In this short statement, he has made both sides of the aisle happy.

So is President Obama for or against unions? Or is he simply playing the politician, and artfully choosing the right words, with the right audiences, in order not to alienate any one group, and draw in as many votes for a re-election as possible? Is he playing both sides of the aisle?

HBT: Wedge may drop Ichiro from leadoff

The Seattle Mariners remain in a transition phase, attempting to undo the messes of Bill Bavasi while playing in a beefed up AL West division that includes two teams ? the Rangers and Angels ? that are throwing money around like they just got some magic pants.

A big part of that transition will involve 38-year-old right fielder Ichiro, whose contract runs out after the 2012 season. He?s coming off his worst season in the big leagues and will make $17 million in 2012, money the M?s would no-doubt like to spend elsewhere.

It seems that manager Eric Wedge is already preparing for life without Ichiro, saying in an interview with 710 ESPN in Seattle on Wednesday that there is ?a good possibility,? he?ll be dropping Ichiro from his customary spot at the top of the batting order.

?I?ve been doing a ton of thinking about that and I still haven?t decided what I?m going to do,? he said. ?I?ve got a vision in mind in regards to what I want to see happen. Obviously I?ve got to work off of Ichiro a little bit, but ultimately I?m going to do what I think?s best to give us the best chance to score runs, because it?s too important for us to make a huge step offensively.?

Pressed on the question of removing Ichiro from the leadoff spot, Wedge admitted that ?if you had to put a gun to my head right now I?d probably be leaning in that direction.?

Wedge said his ideal leadoff hitter gets on base a lot ? which Ichiro used to do (.370 career OBP), but didn?t in 2011 (.310)?? and sees a lot of pitches ? something Ichiro has never done. He mentioned Dustin Ackley, who hit .273/.348/.417 in 90 games as a rookie in 2011, as a possible replacement.

Like it or Not, Romney Will Be GOP Nominee (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | It started out as a whole crop of candidates, but now there are only four: Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum. This primary process has held political pundits in suspense, as the leaders atop the polls have interchanged regularly. Yet, in spite of this, one name has been circulating continuously:

Mitt Romney.

The former governor of Massachusetts had tried for the presidency in '08, but lost out on the GOP nomination. Now, it seems, he is doubly determined to secure the White House.

On one hand, Romney certainly seems to always be in possession of the coveted media coverage. Even when he's behind in the polls, it seems that his screen time doesn't diminish. And, according to thestate.com, Romney has been picking up numerous endorsements.

Still, the irony is that Romney continues to be a figure of division within his own party; there's a looming sense of distrust in his values, which explains why conservative candidates like Santorum sometimes enjoy a temporary boost; also, he's been suspiciously mum with regards to his Mormon faith. Even 2008 candidate Mike Huckabee, according to huffingtonpost.com, suggested that Romney needs to address his faith. The longer he stays mum on his faith, the more people wonder what he may have to hide. And that's the worst possible impression a presidential candidate can make.

Now, after all this, you may be wondering how I can still say that Romney will win. The answer is simple: He's the only one who stands a chance at beating President Barack Obama this November. If a staunch Republican sat back and looked at the bigger picture, they would know that Romney's moderate stances on some issues could help sway key undecided voters to his side. Let's face it, many Americans are disenchanted with President Obama, as the promised change did not come overnight. According to nytimes.com, Obama is particularly vulnerable with the coveted swing voters. Yet, because of his liberal policies, many may still give him their vote if his opponent is a staunch right-wing conservative.

At some point in the very near future, the GOP will have to decide if they want to hold to their party's conservative principles and risk losing the election by choosing a traditional candidate, or if they are willing to sacrifice some of their principles in order to have a plausible chance of regaining the White House from the Democrats.

Something tells me that they will choose the latter.

TAMPA, Fla. ? Under pressure, Newt Gingrich arranged the release of a contract Monday night showing the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. paid his consulting firm a $25,000 monthly retainer fee in 2006, for a total of $300,000.

The agreement calls for "consulting and related services" but makes no mention of lobbying.

Gingrich has likened his work for the federally backed mortgage giant known as Freddie Mac to that of a historian, and later a strategic adviser. His top rival for the Republican presidential nomination, Mitt Romney, says he was lobbying.

Monday's disclosure touched off fireworks between the two contenders during a prime-time debate.

"This contract proves you were not a historian. You were a consultant," Romney said. "And you were hired by the chief lobbyist of Freddie Mac."

Gingrich chafed at the suggestion he was "influence peddling" and turned the issue back on his opponent.

"Gov. Romney has done consulting work for years," the former House speaker said. "I've never suggested his consulting work was lobbying."

Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac was disclosed long ago, but controversy has flared in the 48 hours since he trounced Romney in the South Carolina Republican presidential primary. Throughout the early voting states, Gingrich has faced questions from voters concerned about his work for Freddie Mac at town halls. A pro-Romney attacked him on the issue in Iowa. Reporters began asking if he would release the contracts in New Hampshire.

The next primary is set for Jan. 31 in Florida, a state particularly hard hit by the housing crisis of 2008, and one where Gingrich's connections with Freddie Mac may carry a political stigma.

The material was released by the Center for Health Transformation, which Gingrich helped create, and has since sold. The Center for Health Transformation and the Gingrich campaign share a lawyer, Stefan Passantino. He did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Its disclosure came about two hours before a campaign debate in Tampa, and the timing suggested Gingrich was hoping to blunt any attack Romney might make at the event.

Romney has been ramping up criticism for not making the details public sooner. Gingrich said it wasn't only up to him because he no longer controls the firm named in the contract and confidentiality clauses were at play.

The disclosure came amid a volley between the Romney and Gingrich campaigns about who is hiding information voters may want. After facing pressure himself, Romney intends to release some tax records on Tuesday, about a week after Gingrich made his tax returns public.

Gingrich has said previously that firms he ran received about $1.6 million from Freddie Mac for consulting services over several years, and he personally pocketed $35,000 a year. Only the contract covering 2006 was released.

A person who worked closely with Freddie Mac during the years Gingrich was receiving money said Monday night that the former House speaker was employed by the company from 1999 to 2002 by the company's then-chief political executive to review policy proposals created in the hope they would make Freddie Mac more appealing to Republicans.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of fear of retaliation, said that Gingrich was hired again in 2006 by the company's new chief political executive Hollis McLoughlin ? he still works there ? to speak and write on the benefits of Freddie Mac. He was paid $300,000 for 2006, and received some additional money in 2007.

In all, he was employed by the political arm of the company for approximately $1.7 million for the sole purpose of convincing fellow Republicans that Freddie Mac was a force for good in America. The person who provided the information on Gingrich's employment pointed to the open-ended nature of the 2006 contract that was released Monday.

Romney's campaign said it wasn't satisfied with only the contract. "He's got to come clean on Freddie Mac. He put out a contract today for a single year even though he's been providing services to Freddie Mac for multiple years," said senior Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom. "That contract raises more questions than it answers."

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said there are no plans for additional disclosures.

The survival of the endangered snow leopard is looking promising thanks to Monash University scientists who have, for the first time, produced embryonic stem-like cells from the tissue of an adult leopard.

Never before have induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, which share many of the useful properties of embryonic stem cells, been generated from a member of the cat family. The breakthrough raises the possibility of cryopreservation of genetic material for future cloning and other assisted reproduction techniques.

The study, published in Theriogenology, is part of the PhD project of Rajneesh Verma, supervised by Dr Paul Verma, both from the Monash Institute of Medical Research (MIMR). Associate Professor Peter Temple-Smith of Monash University's Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Professor Michael Holland of the University of Queensland also collaborated.

The researchers used ear tissue samples taken from adult snow leopards at Mogo Zoo, in NSW, to generate the iPS cells.

Dr Verma said the breakthrough was significant due to the difficulty of obtaining reproductive cells, or gametes, even from animals in captivity.

"There is a lot of interest in cryopreservation of tissue from endangered species, but for this to be useful for conservation, both sperm and an egg are required."

"The power of stem cells is that they can differentiate into all the cell types in the body. This means, they have the potential to become gametes. In fact, mouse iPS cells have given rise to entire off-spring, so the possibilities are enormous," Dr Verma said.

Mr Verma said the benefits of the breakthrough for the conservation of cat species, and biodiversity were clear.

"By generating these stem cells, we've taken the first step in creating reproductive cells from adult tissues of an endangered animal. In the future, we aim to harness the potential of the iPS cells and create off-spring. This would help save species from extinction," Mr Verma said.

The snow leopard is a large cat native to the mountain ranges of Central Asia. Their high-altitude habitat and shy nature make accurate population counts difficult, but it is estimated that between 3500 and 7000 snow leopards exist in the wild, with numbers on the decline.

Mr Verma said he became fascinated with large cats during his childhood in India.

"I'm really following my passion in applying my expertise in stem cells to help save these animals. I am applying the same techniques to other members of cat family, including the Bengal tiger, the jaguar and the serval."

Physicists use ion beams to detect art forgery

University of Notre Dame nuclear physicists Philippe Collon and Michael Wiescher are using accelerated ion beams to pinpoint the age and origin of material used in pottery, painting, metalwork and other art. The results of their tests can serve as powerful forensic tools to reveal counterfeit art work, without the destruction of any sample as required in some chemical analysis.

Their research is featured on the front cover of the current issue of Physics Today in an article titled, "Accelerated ion beams for art forensics." Wiescher and Collon say, "Art experts play an important role in identifying the style, history and context of a painting, but a solid scientific basis for the proper identification and classification of a piece of art must rely on information from other sources.

"A host of approaches with origins in biology, chemistry and physics have allowed scientists and art historians not only to look below a painting's or artifact's surface, but also to analyze in detail the pigments used, investigate painting techniques and modifications done by the artist or art restorers, find trace materials that reveal ages and provenances, and more," Wiescher and Collon continue.

The information that is revealed can shed light on trading patterns, economic conditions and other details of history. For example, the amount of silver in Roman coins can indicate the degree of inflation in the ancient economy.

Laboratories in Europe, including several in Italy and one in the basement of the Louvre in Paris, have accelerators dedicated to the forensic analysis of art, and archaeological artifacts. These accelerator-based techniques have allowed not only to analyze the works themselves, but also to determine origin, trade and migration routes as well as dietary information. As an example, the analysis of the ruby eyes in a Babylonian statue of the goddess Ishtar using the Louvre's accelerator showed that the rubies came from a mine in Vietnam, demonstrating that trade occurred between those far-apart regions some 4,000 years ago.

At Notre Dame, researchers are using proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) and Accelerator Mass Spectroscopy (AMS) to study artifacts brought by local archeologists, Native American cultures in the American Southwest and the Snite Museum of Art extensive collection of Mezzo-American figurines.

Wiescher, the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Physics, and Collon, associate professor of physics, are using their findings to teach undergraduates. Wiescher initially developed the undergraduate physics class called Physical Methods in Art and Archaeology, and now Collon teaches the class which attracts students from nearly every major. The course covers topics such as X-ray fluorescence and X-ray absorption, proton-induced X-ray emission, neutron-induced activation analysis, radiocarbon dating, accelerator mass spectroscopy, luminescence dating, and methods of archeometry.

Inter advances to Italian Cup quarterfinals

MILAN (AP) -Inter Milan's recent renaissance gathered more momentum with a 2-1 win over Genoa on Thursday that put the club into the Italian Cup quarterfinals.

Brazil right back Maicon opened the scoring in the ninth minute at the San Siro and midfielder Andrea Poli doubled the lead with his first goal for Inter in the 50th, giving the Milan club its seventh consecutive win in all competitions.

Inter's current streak has helped the club close the gap to Serie A leader Juventus to six points approaching the season's midpoint.

Slovenian midfielder Valter Birsa pulled one back for Genoa in added time.

Aiming for its third consecutive cup title, Inter will next face Napoli.

The other quarterfinal matchups are Juventus vs. Roma, Lazio vs. AC Milan and Siena vs. Chievo Verona.

Maicon scored with a spectacular curving shot into the top left corner from outside the area and Poli used a volley to take advantage of an over-the-shoulder pass from Joel Obi.

Inter rested its usual starting goalkeeper Julio Cesar and forward Diego Milito, who scored the winner in Sunday's 1-0 derby victory over Milan.

Playmaker Wesley Sneijder started, however, and again showed he's regaining his form after missing more than two months with a right leg muscle injury. The Netherlands playmaker missed high with a long shot two minutes in and had another solid effort pushed away by Genoa goalkeeper Cristiano Lupatelli in the 30th.

Genoa rested several usual starters, including goalkeeper Sebastien Frey and strikers Alberto Gilardino and Rodrigo Palacio.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? A banking executive has been selected to guide Penn State's Board of Trustees through the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Trustees elected Karen Peetz as president of the 32-member board. Peetz is a vice chairman of The Bank of New York Mellon.

Peetz says the board will focus on themes of change, reform and transparency.

The trustees also elected farm owner Keith Masser as the vice chair.

They're replacing Steve Garban and John Surma, respectively, as trustee leaders.

Garban and Surma decided not to run again. They and other trustees have been criticized by some alumni and former players for their actions after former assistant football coach Sandusky was charged with dozens of counts of child sex abuse last November.

Peetz says that "all of us, including the board, with the wisdom of hindsight could have done things differently."

Penn State President Rodney Erickson is trying to address the perception that the university isn't being as open and honest as it could be in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Erickson said in remarks Friday to the university's Board of Trustees that he's continuing to reach out to alumni, students and other groups and working to be more accountable.

The trustees are meeting for the first time since the chaotic week in November after dozens of child sex abuse charges were brought against Sandusky, a retired assistant football coach who had been highly regarded for his charity work with children.

Some alumni are calling for wholesale changes in the board's makeup and more transparency from the board and administration.

"I also believe openness and communication are the best way to move Penn State forward," Erickson said.

He called the last two months an "extraordinarily trying time" for the school, and said the university is cooperating with several ongoing investigations related to the Sandusky case.

The meeting, in the ballroom of a campus hotel, drew a larger-than-normal crowd of at least 200 people, including a couple of candidates hoping to win election to the board this spring. Former Penn State running back Franco Harris, a vocal critic of the administration and supporter of ousted coach Joe Paterno, also attended.

Some alumni and former players, Harris among them, have been critical of the 32-member board for how they handled Paterno's dismissal four days after Sandusky was charged on Nov. 5.

After remaining mostly silent the last two months, trustees this week began to divulge the reasons behind their actions, hoping to sway skeptics and critics seeking change.

Leadership positions were up for election at Friday's meeting. In the morning, the board also heard a very broad presentation on the school's athletic programs.

"We have lots of things that we need to do in terms of the board and how it operates, and I think you'll see some positive things come out of that," trustee Mark Dambly said Thursday.

The handling of the Sandusky scandal has sparked unprecedented interest among potential candidates for three alumni-elected seats on the board that are up for a vote this spring.

Typically, about six to 12 candidates step forward. But the group Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship alone has received 30 applications seeking an endorsement. The group started in mid-November, growing out of what a spokeswoman said was a common frustration among members over a lack of due process at the school for Paterno.

Comments this week by the trustees about why the board ousted Paterno on Nov. 9 failed to convince the alumni group.

Trustees interviewed Thursday by The Associated Press said they decided to force Paterno out in part because he didn't meet a moral obligation to do more to alert authorities about a child sex abuse allegation against Sandusky.

The trustees also cited statements from Paterno in the days and hours leading to his dismissal ? after nearly a half-century of leading the Nittany Lions ? that they felt challenged the trustees' authority. Board members saw that as inappropriate, particularly at a time of intense scrutiny over the Sandusky case.

The head coach had testified before a state grand jury about a 2002 allegation against Sandusky that was passed on to him by a graduate assistant. A day after that graduate assistant, Mike McQueary, came to see him, Paterno relayed the accusations to his superiors, one of whom oversaw campus police. Board members didn't think that was enough.

"There's an obligation, a moral responsibility, for all adults to watch out for children, either your own or someone else," Dambly said. "It was in our opinion that Joe Paterno did not meet his moral obligation and for that reason ? me, personally for that reason, I felt he could no longer lead the university and it was unanimous."

But Dambly and three other trustees interviewed Thursday on the Penn State campus said they still intended to honor Paterno's accomplishments and contributions to the school. He won a Division I record 409 games over 46 seasons and the Paterno family has donated millions of dollars to the school.

"Obviously Joe Paterno is a worldwide icon and has done a tremendous amount for the university," trustee Joel Myers said. "We have sorrow and all kinds of emotions, empathy, sympathy for what has occurred. That's universal.

"But the university, this institution is greater than one person."

An attorney for Paterno called the board's comments self-serving and unsupported by the facts. Paterno fully reported what he knew to the people responsible for campus investigations, lawyer Wick Sollers said.

"He did what he thought was right with the information he had at the time," Sollers said.

In a separate statement, Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship said the board's comments have "done nothing but raise additional questions."

Dambly insisted Paterno was not fired, although he never appeared as coach again. He remains a tenured faculty member.

On Friday, Erickson also outlined his goals for the coming year which he said could be challenging because of tightening budget strings. He said the school needed to focus on its "core business" of academics.

Erickson, who plans to step down in 2014, also said the university "must always be mindful of the need for institutional humility, integrity and resolve ... Let us seek balance in our words and deeds."

Prince Harry to visit Brazil in March (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's Prince Harry will visit Brazil in March to support his charities there and help enhance U.K.-Brazil ties.

St. James's Palace says the prince will visit Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo from March 9 to the 11th. The Brazil trip comes after Harry tours Belize, the Bahamas and Jamaica in the first week of March on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II as part of the her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The palace said Thursday that it would be the first time Harry visited any of the countries.

The Brazil tour is organized by Britain's Foreign Office, but Harry will stay on privately until March 14.
