NFL notes: Colts' Polian regrets not having backup plan

Polian regrets not having backup plan with Colts

INDIANAPOLIS ? Bill Polian made one big mistake in Indianapolis: Not having an adequate backup for Peyton Manning.

It cost the Colts vice chairman and his son their jobs.

On Wednesday, Polian said that not grooming a replacement for the injured Manning was the primary reason the Colts collapsed this season, going from Super Bowl contender to the league's worst record.

"I've always told the staff that our approach should be to hope for the best but plan for the worst, and I didn't do an adequate enough job of planning for the circumstances we were in," Polian said. "It led to this catastrophe."

When asked if he was referring specifically to finding a backup for Manning, Polian said: "Yes."

It's the first time Polian has commented since he and his son, general manager Chris Polian, were fired Monday.

The longtime NFL executive revived the Colts in two seasons, turning a moribund organization into one of the league's model franchises. During Polian's 14-year tenure, the Colts won 143 regular-season games, eight division titles, two AFC crowns and the first Super Bowl championship in the Indianapolis era.

Bengals: Rookie quarterback Andy Dalton missed practice with the flu, leaving backup Bruce Gradkowski to run the offense during another sub-freezing workout at Paul Brown Stadium. Coach Marvin Lewis said Dalton is expected to be back today and is expected to play Saturday at Houston.

The Bengals are the only northern team without their own covered practice field either in use or under construction. The University of Cincinnati approached the NFL team about jointly building a bubble-covered field when Brian Kelly was football coach, but the Bengals declined. The university then built a practice field with a removable bubble on campus. The Bengals could rent the bubble for four hours at a standard rate of $2,500, but decided against it.

Packers: For the first time since injuring his knee last month, Greg Jennings was able to run routes against the defense in practice ? an indication that the Pro Bowl wide receiver is on track to return for the playoffs. Jennings tore his left medial collateral ligament in a Dec. 11 victory over Oakland, and sat out the final three games of the regular season.

Steelers: Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says he aggravated his sprained left ankle in 13-9 win at Cleveland last weekend but expects to play at Denver on Sunday.

Jets: QB Greg McElroy, who spent his rookie season on injured reserve with a dislocated thumb, blasted the team's locker room during an interview with radio station 97.3 The Zone in Birmingham, Ala., saying there was a "corrupt mind-set" in the locker room and some "extremely selfish individuals. ... There were people within our locker room that didn't care whether we won or lost, as long as they got (theirs)." McElroy didn't single out anyone by name, but his comments came three days after receiver Santonio Holmes was benched near the end of a season-ending loss at Miami for arguing in the huddle and pouting.

Dolphins: Chicago Bears special-teams coordinator Dave Toub is the latest candidate to interview for the Miami coaching job. The Dolphins have also interviewed former Titans coach Jeff Fisher and Todd Bowles, who was Miami's interim coach for the final three games this season after Tony Sparano was fired.

Hurd indicted:Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd was indicted on federal drug conspiracy and possession charges after he and another man were accused of trying to establish a drug-dealing network. The indictment handed up by a federal grand jury in Dallas accuses Hurd, cut by the Chicago Bears after his arrest last month during an undercover drug sting, and codefendant Toby Lujan of single counts of cocaine possession and conspiracy to possess cocaine.
